Lee blasted Maine and Nova Scotia with driving rain and 70 mph winds that downed trees, sapped power for more than 200,000 customers and killed a motorist in Maine. Last weekend, remnants of Hurricane Lee missed New York but slammed into New England and southeastern Canada. In a statement, the center said storm surge in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic could be “life-threatening.” Coastal sections of Delaware and New Jersey could have surges of 1 to 3 feet, according to the hurricane center. Some coastal areas in North Carolina are forecast to see storm surges of 2 to 4 feet. “Strengthening is expected during the next day or two, and the system is forecast to become a tropical storm as it approaches the coast of North Carolina,” the hurricane center said in an advisory. On Thursday, the young system was blowing winds of about 35 mph over the Atlantic Ocean, east of Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. The city plans to release a storm guidance to New Yorkers on Friday, he said.
